Planning success for South Hams community hub
Peregrine Mears Architect are delighted to obtained planning approval to allow the conversion of Buckfastleigh Methodist Church to a community hub. An important part of the history of this vibrant small market town in the South Hams which came into its own in 11th Century, when King Canute established the Benedictine Buckfast Abbey in 1018. The Methodist Church was built in 1835, with its use evolving over time, being very much a community facility.
“This is an exciting project to bring fresh life to what is a handsome and important building in Buckfastleigh South Hams” commented Director Perry Mears, “We are excited to be involved and proud to be part of this enthusiastic and passionate team.” The Moor Imagination Collective Community Interest Company has been established, The building has been registered as a community asset by Teignbridge District Council which creates a limited period for a plan for the future to be developed, following consultation with the local community The raising of sufficient funds to purchase the building and undertake the work is key.The project is currently the subject of a number of fund raising initiatives including a bid to the Architectural Heritage Fund. It’s hoped these will help secure a vibrant and viable future for an historic building.
Perry Mears continued “It is so important that buildings are used and can find a worthwhile and viable use; this is sometimes this may be far from that imagined originally. Many former public buildings and commercial properties are being covered to other uses, as communities see the impact of lifestyle changes and the impact of online shopping and out-of-town retail parks. Challenges can create opportunities, and through development and innovation, new chapters can be created.
