Barn Conversion with Estuary Views

Barn conversions often make interesting homes of great character and being in the countryside, are often in enviable situations. Springfield Barn certainly ticks both of those boxes. Its elevated position has panoramic views over the rolling Devon hills towards Bideford Bay and Hartland Point.

The barn consisted of two wings framing a small courtyard. The width of both meant they could only be one room wide, which called for an ingenious layout to minimise circulation. Our solution was to make the middle section and open plan living space and place bedrooms and bathrooms at each end. Unusually for barns, this one being a Linhay structure, had lots of large openings which meant large areas of glazing allowing all rooms to open onto the courtyard.

Internally the barn has a wood burning stove and vaulted ceilings. Externally the outdoor space includes a hot tub on the west side where the views are. The building was finished in time for the 2020 holiday season and has proved popular with visitors seeking a rural retreat.
